Features & Control Options

Space combat in Star Fox 64 Remake showing the Arwing aiming reticle and Slippy Toad.
Tracking targets through space debris requires the precision of the Joy-Con 2 Mouse Controls.
Particle effects from destroyed ships remain stable during high action sequences.

The Star Fox 64 Remake uses the increased performance of the Switch 2 for high-fidelity textures and a sweeping orchestral score. The highlight addition are the Joy-Con 2’s Mouse Controls. In single-player modes, the Joy-Con 2 can act as a mouse for precise aiming. The mouse controls also support a new co-op mode where one player handles flight while a second player manages gunner duties with mouse-accurate aim.

The remake project includes:

Star Fox 64 Remake Corneria mission gameplay featuring Falco Lombardi comms.
Environmental lighting on Corneria showcases the improved performance of the Nintendo Switch 2.
The river and foliage textures provide a more dense atmosphere than previous entries.
  • Visual Overhaul: Modernized character designs and environments. Planets like Corneria and the oceans of Zoness feature updated lighting and particle effects.
  • Cinematic Storytelling: Fully voiced dialogue and new mission briefings expand the lore of the Star Fox team and the forces of Andross.
  • GameChat Integration: A social feature allowing players to use interactive character avatars and AR filters during communication.

Expanded Game Modes

This level of detail supports the goal of a complete technical overhaul.

Star Fox 64 Remake retains its classic branching Campaign Mode with the medal progression system used to unlock Expert difficulty. New additions include:

  • Challenge Mode: A space to replay cleared stages with objectives not found in the main story.
  • 4-vs-4 Battle Mode: A revamped multiplayer experience featuring Team Star Fox against Team Star Wolf. Objectives include zone control on Corneria and crystal collection on Fichina.
  • GameShare Support: Up to four players can participate in local or online matches via GameShare.

Star Fox 64 Remake | Editor’s Take

It’s interesting to see Nintendo return to Star Fox 64 again, after an absence from the series for so long. The thing is we’ve had reimaginings, remasters and remakes of Star Fox so many times already. Once with 64, a second time with 3DS, and a third time with Zero on the Wii U. My hope is that this is going to be used to gauge interest in the series before going full speed ahead on another Star Fox Adventures entry.

I understand it was a polarizing title, but it is my not only my favorite Star Fox game, but also something that had a solid foundation that can be improved upon with another entry and today’s hardware. It’s been a long time since the GameCube released, and Adventures has a lot of potential.
