Smoking Behind the Supermarket with You has released its official opening and ending theme song videos ahead of its early streaming debut on ABEMA on June 3.
The promotional sequences arrive prior to the anime’s regular television broadcast block starting in July 2026. Directed by Tadato Suzuki and Aoi Mori, the Asahi Production project drops viewers into a low-key slice-of-life comedy centered on late-night encounters in a grocery store back alley.
Distinct Audio-Visual Profiles & Seiyuu
The standalone opening and ending animations occupy entirely separate musical directions and production layouts. The OP and ED tracks split the thematic presentation across two major contemporary artists:
- The Opening Animation: Features the special theme song “Kuzuri Nen,” which is performed by the musical group Zutomayo.
- The Ending Animation: Focuses on the special theme track “NIGHT DANCER,” performed by the solo artist imase.
Asahi Production is managing the animation pipeline for the series. The production framework pairs directors Tadato Suzuki and Aoi Mori with series composition lead Mio Inoue. Yasuka Otaki is adapting the character designs for the screen, while Shin Kono and Sayaka Aoki are handling the background music composition tracks.
The voice cast configurations align the following actors to the primary roles:
- Sasaki: Takuya Sato
- Yamada / Tamaya: Seena Hoshiki
- Suzuki: Shinya Takahashi
- Goto: Toa Yukinari
- Ono: Megumi Toyoguchi
- Obata: Rikuya Yasuda
- Maezawa: Yoko Hikasa
The anime production draws its material from the original manga series, which initially launched as a self-published webcomic on Twitter in March 2022. Square Enix later picked up the property for serialization in its Monthly Big Gangan magazine in August 2022, with Square Enix Manga & Books handling the current English print distribution. The narrative tracks Sasaki, an overworked 45-year-old corporate salaryman, who forms an unlikely late-night connection with an eccentric woman named Tayama in a supermarket’s rear smoking alley, completely unaware that she is actually his favorite daytime cashier, Yamada, operating under a dual personality.
Smoking In The Supermarket With You | Editor’s Take
Hiring charting artists like Zutomayo and imase marks a clear play for a younger, rhythm-focused demographic. Zutomayo’s chaotic arrangements clash with imase’s smooth pop cadences. The sonic differences mirrors the core narrative gimmick. It splits the grinding exhaustion of the corporate day shift from the quiet, neon-lit comfort of a late-night smoking bench.
Adapting a manga built on casual, conversational timing inside mundane places poses a real directional challenge. Asahi Production must use intimate, voyeuristic camera framing to capture the original comic’s charm. Keeping the visual scale small is crucial. If subtle character acting drives the pace, this project will establish a distinct atmospheric edge over the summer anime block.
