The official Gears of War: E-Day release date is locked in for October 6. Publisher Xbox Game Studios and developer The Coalition confirmed the news, announcing that the upcoming prequel will land on Xbox Series X|S and PC via Steam and the Microsoft Store. It also features Xbox Play Anywhere support, meaning a digital purchase covers both your console and PC copies.
Keeping with standard first-party tradition, it hits Game Pass on day one. Despite Microsoft’s recent strategy shifts regarding multiplatform releases, Xbox CEO Asha Sharma confirmed that the title is launching strictly as a console exclusive for the Xbox ecosystem. Players looking to jump in early can secure pre-orders now to get into the open beta starting August 6, alongside the Exfil Dom character skin and the Exfil weapon skin set at launch.
Gears of War: E-Day Gameplay Demo Reveal
Recapturing Emergence Day’s Horror
E-Day pulls the timeline back fourteen years before the events of the original Gears of War. The campaign focuses on a younger Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago as they witness the initial onslaught of the Locust Horde. The Coalition is framing this as a return to the series’ darker roots, prioritizing the raw horror and claustrophobic brutality of Emergence Day over the broader military sci-fi scope of later entries.
Structurally, the story aims to recapture the intimate, desperate tone of the original 2006 release, tracking the immediate chaos of a society collapsing from underneath. Alongside the gameplay look, the team also pulled back the curtain on the physical package for collectors.
