Casshan 2045 Announced: Reimagining of Classic Amano Anime

Singapore-based anime studio Kasagi Labo has announced Casshan 2045, a new science-fiction project that will reimagine Tatsunoko Production’s 1973 classic Shinzō Ningen Casshan. The reveal took place during the company’s presentation at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival.

As first reported by animation news outlet Cartoon Brew, the upcoming production features original character design concepts by legendary artist Yoshitaka Amano, known for his iconic work on Final Fantasy, Vampire Hunter D, and Angel’s Egg. Amano was also the original character designer of the 1973 series.

The Legacy of Casshern

The original 1973 anime tells the story of Dr. Azuma’s son, who volunteers to permanently become a human cyborg to fight back against a rogue robot rebellion. Beyond its own merits, the series holds a massive place in gaming and animation history, serving as one of the direct visual inspirations for Capcom’s Mega Man franchise.

The property has seen several notable iterations over the decades, including:

  • The 1993 Casshan: Robot Hunter animated video remake, released in North America by Streamline Pictures and ADV Films.
  • Kazuaki Kiriya’s 2004 live-action Casshern movie remake, distributed in the West by Go Fish Pictures.
  • The acclaimed 2008 television remake Casshern Sins, which was streamed and released on home media by Funimation.

Alongside the newly announced animation project, the franchise is expanding into western print media. Mad Cave Studios’ imprint, Nakama Press, is partnering with Tatsunoko Production to release a new Casshan manga volume by writer Mario B. Long and artist Kusanagi on September 15.
