PlayStation Ending Physical Game Disc Production in January 2028

Future production of PlayStation physical discs will officially end in January 2028, according to Sony. Following this deadline, all new console releases will drop physical discs entirely, shifting exclusively to digital formats on the PlayStation Store and retail download codes. This move marks a massive turning point for software ownership, game preservation, and the second-hand retail market.

Sony Shuts Down Blu-ray Pressing Lines

The news comes directly from a PlayStation Blog update by Sid Shuman, Senior Director of SIE Content Communications. Shuman outlined that the shift is a direct response to a clear industry drop in physical sales.

“As consumer preferences and the broader entertainment industry continue to shift away from physical discs to digital, physical game disc production for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will be discontinued starting January 2028,” Shuman wrote. “Following this date, new games will be available on PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital formats only.”

Sony clarified that the upcoming cutoff will have zero impact on games released before the January 2028 deadline, meaning your existing physical library and backward-compatible catalog will continue to work normally.

The Death of the Used Game Market

According to Sony’s internal data, digital software sales have steadily outpaced physical retail for years, with recent figures indicating that digital purchases make up roughly 85% of total sales on PlayStation platforms.

While the change makes sense for Sony’s bottom line, removing physical options creates real long-term problems for players:

  • Killing Second-Hand Sales: Without physical media to trade, share, or sell, the entire used game market handled by stores like GameStop is effectively dead for future software cycles.
  • Monopoly on Pricing: Going digital-only gives platform holders strict control over retail prices, cutting out competition from retail store discounts and clearance sales.
  • The Preservation Problem: Historians and preservation advocates have long warned about digital-only setups, pointing to closed storefronts and delisted licenses as a major threat to saving video game history.

The industry has been rapidly moving toward this reality anyway. Major titles, including the launch of Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto 6, have already opted to move away from physical discs, choosing instead to ship retail boxes that contain only a paper digital download voucher inside (code in a box). Sony’s latest ruling simply makes that digital-first structure the permanent standard for the platform, a move that closely follows the company’s recent rollout plan for the permanent PS3 and PS Vita PlayStation Store closure.
