Unicorn Overlord was first teased as an unnamed VanillaWare project in the Japanese prologue of 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim through a ??? labeled menu. It was officially revealed during September 2023’s Nintendo Direct with a release date set for March 8, 2024. The game will be available on Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S, marking VanillaWare’s debut on an Xbox platform (Reggy, 2019).

Director Akiyasu Yamamoto noted that Unicorn Overlord is inspired by ‘90s simulation RPGs like Ogre Battle and Final Fantasy Tactics, developed by a team with a deep appreciation for these classics. The game also draws from the evolution of war games, reflecting a resurgence of RTS elements in the 2020s (Bamsey, 2024).

Yamamoto credits the fantasy setting’s success to influences from tabletop RPGs and medieval fantasy war games. Unicorn Overlord blends engaging characters with strategic challenges, allowing players to immerse themselves in character-driven narratives.

Some planned content was cut, including troubadours, dancers, musketeers, and an armor degradation mechanic. Despite these changes, directors Takafumi Noma and Wataru Nakanishi view Unicorn Overlord as their “ideal” creation, with no plans for additional downloadable content (Bamsey, 2024).

Prior to playing Unicorn Overlord, I have delved into various SRPGs such as Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor, Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars, and Fire Emblem: Awakening. In terms of more tactical-focused games, I have completed Valkyria Chronicles 4. , I have beaten Dragon’s Crown and 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim, furthering my experience with VanillaWare titles.

Upon starting the game, you’re greeted to VanillaWare’s signature art style and a very powerful orchestral composition. After a brief introduction cutscene that sets the tragic tone and stakes of the game, you are introduced to the strategic gameplay. This includes unit management and combat, offering a rich blend of tactical depth and customization.

Unit and Combat Mechanics

The game features a tile-like UI for units, indicating Unicorn Overlord‘s row system. Units act differently based on their row placement, with back-row characters also taking damage if there’s an enemy attack affecting both rows. On the unit details screen, four tabs are available: Loadout, Skills, Details, and Stats.

Loadouts:

In the Loadout tab, you can equip or optimize gear for characters. The Tactics system, reminiscent of Final Fantasy XII’s Gambit system, lets you set action priorities and conditions, adding depth and customization to your strategy.

Tactics System:

• Action Priorities: Set specific actions and their priority, such as prioritizing healing over attacking.
• Conditional Requirements: Link actions to conditions for precise control, such as using a healing spell only when an ally’s health drops below a certain percentage.

The game’s diverse unit types and their strengths and weaknesses encourage experimentation with tactics, equipment, and formations. Fans of Fire Emblem, Ogre Battle, and Final Fantasy Tactics will appreciate the depth and variety. Despite the extensive content, it’s presented in a way that remains engaging and manageable.

As a fan of Final Fantasy XII, I was pleased to see the Gambit system’s return. The ability to save and load tactical setups, like optimal healing strategies, enhances customization and consistency. Auxiliary trials also provide a practical way to level up and balance units, smoothing out gameplay. These features contribute to a fluid and personalized combat experience.

Unicorn Overlord captivates with VanillaWare’s signature artistic style, perfectly enhancing the game’s atmosphere. The hand-drawn visuals are detailed and , bringing the world to life with intricate designs and rich colors. Complementing this pleasing aesthetic is a dynamic and emotive soundtrack that shifts seamlessly between dramatic and uplifting tones, reflecting the game’s narrative and emotional highs. Together, the striking visuals and expressive audio create a deeply immersive experience, drawing players into the world of Unicorn Overlord.

Unicorn Overlord is an excellent tactical RPG, blending rich strategic depth with an immersive world. Its row-based combat and adaptable Tactics system, enhanced by Final Fantasy XII’s Gambit elements, provide a customizable and engaging experience. For fans of Fire Emblem who have longed for a more intricate tactical experience, Unicorn Overlord delivers what has been missing from the genre for awhile now.

The gripping narrative features multiple endings and impactful choices, boosting replayability. The dynamic world map, with forts, towns, and environmental challenges, keeps battles fresh and strategic. VanillaWare’s hand-drawn art and emotive soundtrack further the experience.

Despite its complexity and extensive content, which might overwhelm some players, Unicorn Overlord sets a new standard for tactical RPGs. It’s a must-own for fans seeking a deep, satisfying, and strategic gameplay experience.
