Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds | Captain Majima Arrives 4/29 with Trial & Sale

The Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds Captain Majima update launches on April 29, 2026, at 5:00 p.m. PT / 8:00 p.m. ET. Sega confirmed the timing for the new content drop today, which brings the Mad Dog of Shimano into the racing lineup.

The update serves as a major crossover event between the Sonic and Like a Dragon franchises.

New Content & Characters

The primary addition to the roster is Goro Majima in his Captain Majima persona. This version of the character comes with a dedicated vehicle called the Goromaru. Beyond the character and car, the update adds a set of unique emotes and sound effects tailored to Majima’s unpredictable personality.

To support the release, a “Captain Majima Festival” event will run from April 30 until May 3. This in-game celebration provides specific challenges and rewards centered around the new character.

Free Weekend & Golden Week Sale

Sega is also using the update to drive player numbers through a Free Weekend. This trial period begins on April 30 at 10:00 a.m. PT and runs until May 4. This coincides with the Steam Golden Week promotion, where the full version of the game is discounted by 40 percent. The sale price is active through May 7.

Technical Context

Captain Majima performs a "there she blows" gesture while racing his Goromaru vehicle in air mode, flying past other racers in a canyon during the Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds Captain Majima update.

For those playing on Nobara Linux or other PC configurations, the Steam version of Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds remains the best way to experience the high-speed mechanics. The game maintains a steady frame rate on Proton, and the new assets for the Goromaru vehicle do not seem to place any additional strain on the shader cache. We recommend checking for a small client-side update on the 29th to handle the new emotes and sound triggers before the festival starts.

Editor’s Take

We have been calling for more Sega internal crossovers since the game launched. Adding Majima is a smart move because his energy fits the chaotic nature of the CrossWorlds tracks. The Goromaru design is particularly over the top, which is exactly what the vehicle roster needed.

The timing with Golden Week is clearly calculated. A 40 percent discount combined with a free weekend is a strong incentive for anyone who was on the fence. While the Switch 2 version is portable, the PC version offers the most stable performance for the high-end visual effects found on the newer tracks.

Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds is available on Xbox Series S|X, PlayStation 5, Switch 2, Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC via Steam and Epic Games Store.
