Vanillaware’s classic 2D hack-and-slash action-RPG is making a return with massive platform expansions. Revealed during the June 2026 Nintendo Direct broadcast, Muramasa: Revenant Blades is an elevated revival of the legacy PlayStation Vita title Muramasa: Rebirth, targeting an early 2027 launch window.
The most exciting thing about this reveal is the official Muramasa Revenant Blades PC version coming to Steam. This release officially ends Vanillaware’s long-standing absence from the PC platform, opening up their distinct hand-drawn catalog to a massive new audience. Alongside PC, the title will also release on the Switch 2, Switch, and PlayStation 5.
Audio Overhauls & Structural Changes
The updated edition introduces a completely redone localization alongside the franchise’s first-ever full English voiceover track.

On a structural level, the game completely reorganizes how players progress through the story. Rather than walling off the DLC campaigns behind post-game clear files, all six individual story chapters are unlocked and fully playable from the very beginning. Players can tackle the core arcs of legacy protagonists Momohime and Kisuke, or jump straight into the specialized campaigns for Okoi, Gonbe, Arashimaru, and Rajaki in any order they choose.

The gameplay loop retains the core fast-paced side-scrolling swordplay but features updated control responsiveness, new weapon systems, adjusted customization skills, and an expanded roster of over 100 forgeable blades. Visually, the hand-drawn backgrounds and character sprites have been reworked to scale cleanly up to native 4K resolution.

Platform Pricing Tiers & Cartridge Integrity
The retail pricing model illustrates an interesting generational gap for physical collectors. Standard editions will retail for $49.99 on the PlayStation 5 and original Nintendo Switch.
The Nintendo Switch 2 version carries a premium $59.99 price tag, though this tier explicitly guarantees that the entire game is contained natively on the game cartridge without forcing users to sit through large secondary digital downloads.

A premium Limited Edition package will also be available for pre-order at $89.99 for legacy consoles and $99.99 for the Switch 2. This physical collector’s set bundles the base game software with several physical extras:
- A standalone art book highlighting the game’s production illustrations.
- A limited CD soundtrack featuring selected tracks composed by Basiscape.
- A custom 10”x14” byōbu folding display screen featuring panoramic art.

Digital edition pricing models for both consoles and Steam will be detailed later this year.
