Crazy Taxi: World Tour Announced: SEGA’s Arcade Racer Goes Global in 2027

Following a brief teaser way back in late 2023, SEGA has finally given its classic arcade driving series a proper stage. During the Xbox Games Showcase, fans got a massive update with the official Crazy Taxi: World Tour reveal, announcing a broad 2027 launch window.

The high-speed racer is taking a multiplatform route, heading to Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, PC via Steam and the Microsoft Store, and Switch 2. Microsoft has also secured Xbox Play Anywhere status for the new entry, meaning a single digital purchase covers your copies across both Xbox consoles and PC.

The core loop shifts away from the classic pure arcade setup by introducing a narrative-driven World Tour campaign mode. Series regular Axel returns to find that an international syndicate of car thieves has made off with his iconic yellow cab. Tracking them down means taking your driving skills across five entirely distinct global cities, dealing with unique terrain challenges, and interacting with a cast of eccentric local characters along the way.

But SEGA and original Crazy Taxi creator Kenji Kanno are clearly thinking much bigger than just recreating a 1999 arcade game with modern graphics. Axel now has a much larger set of Crazy driving moves at his disposal, and his customers have a very broad range of special requests. They do not just want to go to the local music store or fast food joint anymore. Instead, they want Axel to take them fishing or help them deliver massive stacks of pizzas.

These new additions to the gameplay are called, appropriately, Crazy Missions. It turns the driving systems into a broader toolkit, transforming what used to be simple navigation into a series of bizarre, physics-driven puzzles.

SEGA is dividing the package across a few distinct modes to cater to different playstyles:

  • The World Tour Campaign: The main story mode tracking Axel’s stolen vehicle across global maps and tackling those erratic Crazy Missions.
  • Classic Arcade Mode: A traditional, focused race against the countdown timer to simulate the original arcade cabinet experience.
  • Multiplayer Modes: A suite of action-packed, cross-platform online lobbies where you can challenge friends or random players globally.

The studio is also adding a comprehensive vehicle unlock system, letting you customize your ride with various visual parts and performance alterations as you build up your bank roll.

We will keep you updated as SEGA shares more gameplay footage and confirms a concrete release date over the next year.
