The Kowloon’s Gate English patch will release on June 9, 2026, bringing a complete fan translation to the Japan-exclusive PlayStation classic. The project is being led by ROM hacker Hilltop, making the 1997 adventure playable in English for the first time.
Originally released only in Japan, Kowloon’s Gate developed a cult following thanks to its surreal presentation, cyberpunk setting, and heavy use of Chinese folklore and Taoist philosophy. Its dense script and extensive voice work have long made it one of the more challenging PlayStation titles to localize.
A Long-Awaited Fan Translation
The English patch translates the game’s dialogue, menus, and other text while also providing subtitles for spoken dialogue throughout the adventure.
Players assume the role of a Feng Shui practitioner investigating the mysterious return of Hong Kong’s Kowloon Walled City. Exploration alternates between first-person navigation through pre-rendered environments and cinematic sequences as players work to restore balance to the city.
According to the project team, the translation was a collaborative effort involving multiple contributors. Cargodin handled the primary English script, while _dk transcribed Chinese dialogue. Additional work, including Vietnamese dialogue translation and technical support, was provided by community members such as Neutronoid and Ninkintn.
A Cult PlayStation Classic
Kowloon’s Gate originally launched across four PlayStation discs, combining pre-rendered visuals, full-motion video, and an atmospheric soundtrack to create one of the console’s more unconventional adventure games.
Although it never received an official localization, the title has remained a frequent topic among preservation enthusiasts due to its distinctive setting and reputation as one of the PlayStation’s most ambitious Japan-exclusive releases.
Editor’s Take
Fan translations like this help preserve games that may never receive an official English release. Kowloon’s Gate has spent nearly three decades locked behind a language barrier, making this project an opportunity for a much wider audience to experience one of the PlayStation’s most unusual cult classics.
