STRANGER THAN HEAVEN | Story Reveal Trailer
A Fifty-Year Technical Reconstruction
The story follows Makoto Daito through five distinct eras and cities, spanning half a century of Japanese history. The narrative begins in 1915 San Francisco, where Daito stows away on a ship bound for Japan. RGG Studio is recreating historical locations with a focus on technical accuracy and era-specific atmosphere. The confirmed locations include:
- 1915, Kokura: A foundry town defined by heavy industry and smoke.
- 1929, Kure: A naval port influenced by early yakuza organizations.
- 1943, Osaka: An entertainment district set during the height of the war.
- 1951, Atami: A popular seaside getaway in postwar Japan.
- 1965, Shinjuku: The iconic Tokyo pleasure district in a state of chaos.
Independent Limb Combat & Showman Mechanics

The combat system introduces a significant mechanical shift for RGG Studio. Players control the left and right sides of Makoto Daito independently. This allow for instinctive attacking and defending; you can block with one hand while simultaneously countering with the other.

Outside of street fights, the game features the Life of a Showman system. Makoto must scout talent and produce musical acts. This involves a sound collection mechanic where you record environmental noises like train rumbles or animal cries to craft original tracks. Players will also manage lighting, staging, and band arrangements to build a performance empire.
Cast & Digital Preservation
The cast features an international lineup including Snoop Dogg, Ado, and Tori Kelly. The most notable technical inclusion is the late actor Bunta Sugawara. Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio used archival footage and photographs provided by Toei Company to create a digital version of Sugawara with the consent of his family. The character’s voice is performed by Takashi Ukaji, who shared a close personal connection with the late actor. The characters in STRANGER THAN HEAVEN also speak their native language instead of a universal English or Japanese track, adding a level of immersion we haven’t gotten before with an RGG game.
STRANGER THAN HEAVEN Release Window | Editor’s Take
STRANGER THAN HEAVEN looks like it will deliver on what Yakuza has really been missing out on. It lets you work your way up the ladder as the player and see the consequences of your character’s actions all play out. Securing Akio Otsuka for the project is a welcomed choice. He was already great as Adachi in Yakuza: Like a Dragon, serves as the official Japanese dub for Nicolas Cage, and is a personal favorite of mine for voicing Batou in Ghost in the Shell.
What I am looking forward to seeing the most with STRANGER THAN HEAVEN is how well it will be able to differentiate itself from being a Yakuza game. The independent limb system sounds like RGG Studio is building off the damage system they have been working on with the upcoming new Virtua Fighter game.
