Shuhei Handa Shares His Vision for The Ghost In The Shell 2026 Anime

The upcoming The Ghost in the Shell anime adaptation just got its first major creative update, straight from character designer and executive animation director Shuhei Handa.

This series marks a massive structural shift for the property. Production I.G has basically owned the animated landscape for Masamune Shirow’s cyberpunk manga for decades, steering everything from the iconic 1995 theatrical movie to the television series Stand Alone Complex. Passing the torch to Science SARU brings a completely different flavor to the table, moving away from heavy, hyper-detailed military realism and leaning into fluid, highly expressive line work.

Aiming for Art That Lasts

Handa talked directly about the historical weight on his shoulders. The franchise has stayed relevant for decades because every new creative team respected the original material while pushing the presentation forward. For his part, Handa is ignoring flash-in-the-pan industry trends to focus on pure durability. His actual goal is to build a visual style that people will still cherish 20 or 30 years from now, matching the staying power of the older adaptations.

Here is Handa’s full statement on joining the production:

Ever since the 1995 feature film, The Ghost in the Shell has been adapted into anime numerous times, earning the enduring love of fans over the years. I myself am one of those who was captivated by it. It would make me incredibly happy if this brand new Ghost in the Shell could be cherished for the next ten, twenty, or thirty years, just like the masterpieces that came before it.

With that sentiment in mind, I am supporting this new series from a visual perspective. I never dreamed that I would one day participate in the production of The Ghost in the Shell, but seeing this as a stroke of ‘connection’ (En), I have chosen to ‘fuse’ with this world. I am deeply grateful to those who gave me this opportunity.

I hope that long-time fans and those who have never heard of The Ghost in the Shell alike will enjoy the show. Please look forward to it, we hope it exceeds your expectations.”

What This Means for the Upcoming Anime

Putting a single artist in charge of both character design and chief animation direction is a wise decision. It centralizes creative control, making sure the initial character blueprints actually survive the journey to the final screen frames.

The production strategy boils down to two main ideas:

  • Respecting the Blueprint: Keeping the new look anchored in the core design philosophies built by earlier creators.
  • Welcoming New Viewers: Keeping the line work clean and readable so it hits right for hardcore fans while making it easy for total newcomers to hop into the universe.

Science SARU is famous for elastic, highly kinetic movement. Throwing that style into a world known for dense political tech-talk and rigid geometry is a fascinating gamble. Handa’s technical eye will ultimately decide if this stylistic change can successfully rescue a franchise that spent its recent years stuck in sterile, generic 3D space.
