The prominent industry veteran passed away on April 18, 2026, leaving behind a prolific career spanning over three decades across major interactive entertainment franchises and animated serials.

Yamazaki established herself as a premier vocal talent within the Japanese voice acting sector, securing major roles that defined foundational anime and gaming properties from the mid-1990s onward:
- Detective Conan (Case Closed): Voiced the lead heroine Ran Mouri continuously from the animated series debut in 1996 through multiple decades of television episodes, theatrical feature adaptations, and video game spin-offs.
- Dead or Alive & Ninja Gaiden: Served as the definitive Japanese vocal profile for Ayane, the purple-haired kunoichi. Yamazaki voiced the character across multiple mainline fighting game entries, crossover expansions, and action titles developed by Team Ninja.

This is an incredibly heavy loss for fans of Dead or Alive, Ninja Gaiden, Detective Conan, and the many distinct properties Wakana Yamazaki lent her voice to. Yamazaki voiced Ayane from the very beginning of the original Dead or Alive, portraying my personal favorite character in the franchise next to Kasumi. Losing her is a massive blow to the community, especially following the loss of Tomonobu Itagaki last October, and arriving right alongside the recent launch of Ninja Gaiden 4, the upcoming Last Round revision of Dead or Alive 6, and the new DOA project currently in development. Many fans, including myself, were holding out hope for an Ayane story expansion in Ninja Gaiden 4, a prospect that is now entirely uncertain.
Team Ninja faces a complex path ahead because the Japanese industry navigates seiyuu passings with a unique level of cultural reverence compared to Western voice recasting. Studios often rely on archived audio recordings to honor a performer, retire the character entirely out of respect to let them pass together, or pause production for an extended mourning period before carefully selecting a successor. Rest in peace, Wakana Yamazaki, and thank you for bringing Ayane to life.
