Naoki Urasawa’s Monster Blu-ray Pre-Orders Open via Discotek

Monster Discotek Blu-ray pre-orders are officially live, marking the first time Naoki Urasawa’s acclaimed psychological thriller has received a North American anime physical release in over a decade.

Dropping as part of the publisher’s August 2026 lineup, Monster: Collection 1 bundles the first 37 episodes of the series, narrowing the gap between its recent industry announcement and retail availability.

Transfer Specs: The SD Upscale

The digital SD upscale prioritizes clean line work and preserves original grain patterns.

Because Monster was originally animated digitally in standard definition during its mid-2000s production run, a native 1080p master does not exist. Discotek’s release uses a standard-definition upscale designed to preserve line work and minimize compression artifacts.

The breakdown for the video transfer includes:

  • Digital SD Upscale: Optimized to handle the show’s dark, muted color palette without introducing aggressive digital noise reduction.
  • Variable Frame Rates: Certain episodes were natively animated at non-standard frame rates. Discotek is preserving these unique native frame timings rather than forcing a uniform pulldown, ensuring smooth playback exactly as intended.

Discotek’s transfer avoids aggressive digital noise reduction to maintain the gritty aesthetic.

Audio & Subtitle Features

The physical release preserves the legacy audio choices, catering to both subtitle purists and dub fans:

  • Audio Tracks: Includes the original Japanese mix alongside the classic English dub.
  • Localization Options: When viewing the Japanese audio track, you can choose between English or Spanish subtitles.

Original asset frame rates are preserved to ensure accurate character movement during playback.
