Touhou Koumakyou New Classic, officially titled Touhou Koumakyou: New Classic – the Embodiment of Scarlet Devil, is making its way to modern systems later this autumn. Alliance Arts and developer Shanghai Alice Reprise confirmed during the Direct cycle that the ground-up remake of the landmark 2002 vertical shooter drops globally on Wednesday, September 9, 2026.
The project brings the game that essentially kickstarted the modern Touhou scene over to the Switch 2, Switch, PlayStation 5, and PC via Steam. The best news for anyone who used to struggle with importing legacy Japanese physical PC discs is that this release features a native localization suite covering 11 languages right out of the box. These include English, French, German, Spanish, and Brazilian Portuguese.
Modern Facelift Meets Original Mechanics
Original series creator ZUN is leading the project alongside developer JUNYA. Instead of rebuilding the game in a completely foreign engine framework that messes with the physics, the team is keeping the underlying logic of the 2002 release intact while completely overhauling the visual presentation.
The release introduces a few major structural changes:

- Dual Gameplay Systems: You can choose a new modern setting that gives you infinite lives. It makes learning the tight routing of the narrative much easier. If you want a brutal blast from the past, you can flip a classic toggle that keeps the authentic arcade resource constraints entirely untouched.
- Audio and Visual Overhauls: The low-resolution graphics of the original are updated to look sharp on modern monitors. On the audio front, the game features a completely rearranged version of its legendary soundtrack, recomposed and tracked by ZUN himself.
- The Deluxe Package: A Deluxe Edition will launch alongside the base digital game. It bundles a separate digital soundtrack featuring over 30 tracks, compiling both the original 2002 synth bops and the new 2026 arrangements.
Clearing the Scarlet Mist
The narrative setup is exactly as you remember it. A strange, thick red mist blankets the land of Gensokyo, and it is up to shrine maiden Reimu Hakurei or magican Marisa Kirisame to fly into the Scarlet Devil Mansion and find out who is causing it.

If you have never played a Touhou game, the core mechanics emphasize macro-dodging. You navigate tiny character hitboxes through dense, screen-filling geometric patterns of enemy bullets. Survival depends on learning when to stream across the screen to collect falling point items, when to panic-drop a screen clearing bomb, and how to safely trigger your character’s Spell Cards to break through multi-phase boss fights.

This release finally opens up a historically elusive, foundational piece of bullet-hell history to a massive global console audience without forcing them to jump through the hoops or barriers of emulation. This is also the debut of Flandre Scarlett, Remilia Scarlett, Cirno, Patchouli Knowledge, Sakuya Izaoyoi and many other beloved Touhou characters, making this a must own.
The Legacy of Team Shanghai Alice
This release serves as a major preservation milestone for a franchise that holds the Guinness World Record as the most prolific fan-made shooter series in existence. For over two decades, Touhou Project has largely existed as a one-man studio operation, with original creator ZUN independently handling the design, programming, and music composition under the Team Shanghai Alice banner.
Because the series has historically been distributed via physical Japanese PC discs at indie conventions, modern players have faced steep barriers to entry. This collaboration between Alliance Arts and developer Shanghai Alice Reprise effectively bridges a twenty-four-year gap.

This release finally opens up a historically elusive, foundational piece of bullet-hell history to a massive global console audience without forcing them to jump through the hoops or barriers of emulation. Crucially, this game is also the historical debut of Flandre Scarlet, Remilia Scarlet, Cirno, Patchouli Knowledge, Sakuya Izayoi, and many other beloved Touhou characters, making it an essential pickup for anyone looking to understand where the franchise’s legacy truly began.
