Onimusha: Way of the Sword | Arrives Sept 25, Surprise Demo Launched

Onimusha Way of the Sword release date details were officially locked in for September 25, 2026, during today’s PlayStation State of Play broadcast. Capcom paired the timing announcement with a surprise playable demo that is live right now across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam, Windows, and the Epic Games Store.

While the standard physical and digital versions will retail at a flat $69.99, the PC release comes with the expected caveat of Denuvo anti-tamper DRM. This inclusion makes Capcom’s promise of a future optimization benchmark tool even more vital for Steam users.

Background & Context

The original entries in this series were foundational for Capcom during the PlayStation 2 era, blending historical Japanese settings with rigid fixed-camera angles and high-stakes, timing-heavy swordplay. This new entry completely strips away those old static viewpoints in favor of a modern, over-the-shoulder perspective.

The character model for Miyamoto Musashi leans heavily into classic historical cinema aesthetics.

The narrative follows legendary samurai Miyamoto Musashi during a dark fantasy reimagining of Edo-period Kyoto. In an interesting cinematic touch, Musashi’s face model is explicitly based on the late, iconic samurai movie actor Toshiro Mifune. Armed with a mystical Oni Gauntlet, Musashi must repel a demonic invasion led by underworld forces known as the Genma. Mechanically, Capcom is attempting to bridge the gap between old and new by retaining the series’ signature parry-counter systems and energy absorption loops while fluidly opening up the directional tracking.

Inside Mount Oe: Strongholds & Bosses

A dark, cavernous mountain fortress at Mount Oe with wooden scaffolding, rope bridges, and lit torches.
Mount Oe swaps the classic pre-rendered backgrounds for a fully 3D gauntlet of traps and verticality.

The latest State of Play footage highlights Mount Oe, a newly revealed mountain fortress located outside Kyoto. The stronghold is a multi-level base of operations built directly into steep cavern walls.

This base is commanded by a massive Genma claiming to be the legendary warlord Shuten Doji. The trailer showcases Musashi carving through localized guards using supernatural speed dashes and environmental hazards before utilizing his gauntlet’s energy to trigger a complete transformation into an Oni Warrior.

Musashi’s rival, Sasaki Ganryu, also makes an appearance in the footage. Ganryu brandishes a corrupted Oni Gauntlet of his own, using devilish powers to mirror and counter Musashi’s specific combat styles.

For players wanting to check the mechanical responsiveness of the combat loops immediately, the shadow-dropped demo features a substantive slice of early gameplay. Capcom is letting players test the raw parry windows and sword combat across a complete narrative sequence:

  • Playable Environments: Players can explore a faithful recreation of the historic Kiyomizu-dera Temple grounds.
  • Boss Encounter: The sequence concludes with a high-stakes duel against Sasaki Ganryu.
  • Progress Unlocks: Clearing the demo awards players the “Kubi Akari” charm, which carries over into the final retail release on September 25.

Pre-orders are live today, granting early access to the “Sealed Curse” sword skin and a “Lion Dog” charm. Digital storefronts will also host Deluxe and Premium Deluxe configurations, which bundle extra character cosmetics, alternate outfits for companion characters, and an in-game digital soundtrack.
