Steam Store Tags Update Restructures Storefront Recommendation Engine

The Steam store tags update has officially rolled out to restructure how the storefront categorizes titles, handles algorithmic recommendations, and generates user search hubs.

Valve announced the database overhaul today, adding 17 new classification vectors, purging 28 obsolete or highly subjective labels, and merging redundant categories to clean up backend metadata tracking. This is the first comprehensive categorization refresh since 2024, aiming to fix algorithmic overlap and reduce recommendation noise across custom user feeds.

New Mechanical & Thematic Additions

Valve adds new tags when a distinct volume of software shares common design elements that cannot be accurately linked through existing keyword combinations. The new additions target specific gameplay loops, regional sub-genres, and distinct thematic settings:

  • Gameplay Mechanics: Bullet Heaven (automatic attacks against large hordes), Organizing (tidying or packing spaces), Cleaning (grime removal), Decorating (spatial item placement), and Falling Blocks (top-down block positioning).
  • Thematic & Regional Genres: Wuxia (martial arts historical fantasy), Xianxia (cultivation and supernatural power fantasy), Samurai (historical Japanese military units), and Espionage (stealth intel collection).
  • Software Sub-types: Desktop Companion (overlay software utilizing partial screens), Language Learning, Poker, Zoo, Cult, Wolves, Capybaras, and Animals.

Purged & Obsolete Vectors

The removal pool targets classifications that fail to accurately establish distinct connections between unrelated products. Valve removed 28 specific tags based on three core technical liabilities:

  • High Structural Overlap: Labels like NSFW and Mature created massive index overlap with more descriptive, hard-coded structural content filters such as Sexual Content, Violent, or Gore.
  • Algorithmic Subjectivity: Subjective metadata like Masterpiece, Well-Written, and Cult Classic led to inconsistent application, leaving recommendation bots exposed to user-review bias.
  • IP and Software Restrictions: Dedicated intellectual property markers like Warhammer 40K, LEGO, and Dungeons & Dragons have been deleted. Valve noted that community-sourced indexing is poorly suited for IP categorization, which is already handled directly via developer franchise landing pages. Other niche or underused system markers like 3D Vision, Ambient, Drama, and GameMaker were also stripped out.

Renames & Structural Merges

To eliminate redundancy, Valve executed direct database merges and semantic updates across the remaining index:

  • Incremental Evolution: Clicker has been officially renamed to Incremental to capture the broader mechanical shift of numbers-going-up game loops.
  • Clarity Passes: Conversation shifts to Dialogue Heavy for explicit design definition, while Pool changes to Billiards to stop users from joke-tagging titles featuring swimming pools.
  • Index Consolidation: Niche markers were consolidated into broader parent categories, merging Jet directly into Flight and migrating Unforgiving into Difficult.
