The Onimusha: Way of the Sword overview trailer has been released by Capcom, providing a new look at Musashi and the return of the classic Soul absorb mechanic.
Onimusha: Way of the Sword | Overview Trailer
Miyamoto Musashi is once again introduced to the audience but with more of a lore dump this time around. The trailer details Musashi’s journey of trying to master the blade before being slain by Genma. Musashi rose from the dead with an oni gauntlet on his arm with a new purpose, to rise up against the Genma and cut out a new path for himself. Friends and foes are shown along with combat showcasing parries, the deadly Issin move, and the return of the Soul absorb mechanic to replenish health.
Editor’s Take
Onimusha: Way of the Sword is looking more and more like a must-play as new footage is revealed. Gameplay looks reminiscent of Sekiro and Capcom’s final outing of the original series, Dawn of Dreams. It is great to see the “Soul vacuum” return exactly how we remember it. Capcom seems to be prioritizing that classic rhythm over trying to turn this into a standard Soulslike.
The music sounds good and fits the period with the woodwind scores. The trailer reminded me of the Soul Calibur narrations you’d get before the round started. It has been a long time coming, but hopefully Way of the Sword turns out great. We haven’t had a new entry in years. After Resident Evil Requiem being a home run and Pragmata arriving next month, Capcom is getting their groove back.
Onimusha: Way of the Sword is planned to release this year for PC via Steam, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5.
