Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve | Game Overview

Bandai Namco unveiled Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve as the next mainline entry in its aerial combat series. Developed by Bandai Namco Aces, it returns to Strangereal with a new campaign centered on the occupied Federation of Central Usea and launches October 2, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.

The sequel is being developed with Unreal Engine 5 alongside proprietary technology created for its skies, weather systems, and large-scale aerial battles.

Bandai Namco continued the pre-release campaign on March 26, 2026 with Strangereal Evolution Episode 1, a 30th-anniversary retrospective tracing the evolution of Strangereal from the original 1995 Ace Combat through later entries in the series before concluding with new glimpses of Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve.

Returning to Strangereal

Ace Combat 8 takes place in July 2029 after the Republic of Sotoa overwhelms the Federation of Central Usea, leaving its territory occupied, its navy shattered, and its military scattered.

The campaign begins with the protagonist adrift at sea before being rescued by the Endurance, an aging aircraft carrier carrying civilian refugees. To restore morale, the ship’s command gives the pilot the legendary “Wings of Theve” callsign and presents them as a symbol of hope for the occupied nation.

Players must grow into that fabricated legend while leading Joker Flight, consisting of Baxter, Tasha, and Coster, against the Sotoan forces.

Aircraft and Progression

Project Aces later highlighted the F/A-18E Super Hornet as the protagonist’s signature aircraft on March 24, 2026, emphasizing its medium-speed maneuverability and ability to handle both aerial and anti-surface missions.

Brand Director Kazutoki Kono separately confirmed that players will begin with the earlier F/A-18C, with additional aircraft, including the F/A-18E, becoming available as they progress.

Campaign missions award Military Result Points (MRP), which can be spent through the Aircraft Tree to unlock new aircraft, upgrade parts, and special weapons. Its routes branch as equipment is acquired, while upgrade parts are divided into BODY, ARMS, and MISC categories that can improve flight performance, weapons, or specialized functions such as stealth detection and resistance to icing.

Bandai Namco highlighted the game’s aircraft modeling in its August 2026 The Art of Aircraft trailer, showcasing the level of detail applied to the fighters both in flight and during close-up presentation. The trailer’s rapidly building music gives the showcase a greater sense of urgency, complementing the high-speed footage of the aircraft in motion.

Combat and Mission Design

Ace Combat 8 retains the series’ 360-degree arcade-style aerial combat and high-G turns while giving Joker Flight a more direct role in battle. As squad leader, players can issue attack and cover orders to their wingmen in real time, allowing the rest of the flight to respond to changing combat situations.

Preparation begins before each sortie, with mission briefings providing information that can influence the choice of aircraft, special weapons, and upgrade parts. As the campaign progresses, players can equip two special weapons at once for greater flexibility. A Famitsu hands-on found that equipping only one instead increases its ammunition reserve, creating a tradeoff between versatility and capacity.

Large enemy weapons also use a less restrictive damage system than previous entries. Attacks can damage these targets outside designated target points, while destroyed components and other wreckage can collide with nearby enemies as they fall, triggering chain destruction.

The expanded visual presentation can also provide information during combat. Enemy contrails, damage smoke, and reflections from aircraft can act as visual cues rather than scenery alone. During one mission shown to Famitsu, players could follow contrails to locate aircraft hidden from radar by jamming, while another allowed enemy fighters to be destroyed on the ground before they could scramble.

Larger Skies and the Endurance

Bandai Namco Aces replaced Ace Combat 7‘s licensed trueSKY technology with its internally developed Cloudly system, allowing cloud layers and weather conditions to vary with altitude. The team has also expanded the playable environment to roughly 10,000 square kilometers while rendering the world at a more consistent scale.

The dynamic cloudscapes can affect visibility, target tracking, and missile performance during combat.

Between missions, players can explore the Endurance from a first-person perspective, speak with their wingmen, and experience the strain of the war aboard the aging carrier. Story sequences are presented in real time from the protagonist’s perspective rather than through traditional pre-rendered cinematics.

More of the technology, production process, story presentation, aircraft modeling, training systems, and online-mode development is preserved separately in KonNetwork’s Ace Combat 8 developer diary coverage.
