The Nioh 3 1.05.00 update is now live for PC and PS5, and we finally have the Stone of Penance back in the rotation. Following the mechanical adjustments from the 1.04.03 patch, Team Ninja is leaning into the “Shogun’s Journey” difficulty with a high-stakes accessory crafting system and a new set of late-game missions.
The Stone of Penance Returns
The main draw of this update is the Stone of Penance. For those who spent hundreds of hours in the previous game, the loop is familiar: you trade an accessory at a shrine to significantly increase enemy difficulty. In exchange, the drop rate for high-rarity loot increases while the stone is active.
- The Process: Defeating enemies builds “Penitence.” When the meter is full, you can exchange the stone for rewards. Your original accessory is returned, often with improved traits or a bump in rarity.
- How to Unlock: This feature becomes available after you clear the “Escape from Hitokoto Slope” mission on the Shogun’s Journey difficulty.
- Co-op Play: You can toggle the difficulty spikes in the room settings so you don’t force your visitors into a harder fight than they expected.
New Battle Scroll Missions
The “1622 CE – Final Battle of Edo” region has five new missions. You unlock these after finishing the main campaign. They provide a solid testing ground for new builds and offer specific skills as rewards.
| Mission Name | Unlock Condition |
| Within Time Everlasting | Clear the main game |
| Rampant Temptation | Clear the main game |
| Supernatural Shrieks | Clear one of the above |
| Gathering of the Greats | Clear three new missions |
| Demonic Duels | Clear three new missions |
Weapon & Set Bonus Balancing
Team Ninja adjusted the math for several sets that were falling behind in the meta. The Grace of Vaisravana and Kintaro sets now have better Attack Bonus (Strength) scaling. The General of Ruin set is also much more effective for heavy armor builds.
Weapon specific fixes include:
- Cestuses: The cancel window for “Iron Grip” is now more consistent.
- Spear: A bug that caused massive Ki loss during mid-air strong attacks is gone.
- Odachi: Using “Imperative Strike” during Living Artifact no longer cancels the state early.
Technical Fixes & Linux Performance
On the Steam side, this patch targets stability. We previously saw some ghosting and flickering with FSR3 Frame Generation, but this update appears to clean up those reflections. For those of us playing on Nobara Linux, the 1.05 build feels stable under the latest Proton Experimental. The fix for the “Spirit Tree Village” door bug is a massive relief; that glitch was effectively bricking save files for anyone trying to progress through Shogun’s Journey in co-op.
Nioh 3 1.05.00 Update | Editor’s Take
The Nioh 3 1.05.00 update gives the endgame the “carrot on a stick” it was missing. The Stone of Penance is a fair system because it rewards skill with a direct path to better gear. We also like the adjustment to the Honda crest protection. It was becoming a mandatory pick for survival, and the new scaling makes it feel like a choice rather than a requirement. Team Ninja continues to show that they understand how to tune a combat system without breaking the fun.
