A Whirlpool of Fate
The series follows Riliu and his best friend Jowy, members of the Highland Kingdom’s Unicorn Youth Brigade. What begins as a shared dream of a peaceful future quickly spirals into a struggle for survival as the boys are swept up in the flames of war. As the 108 stars begin to shine on the horizon, both must find their own answers to the impossible questions posed by the conflict.
The Cast of 108 Stars
The adaptation features a massive ensemble cast bringing the iconic characters of the Dunan region to life:
- Riliu (Toshiki Kumagai): The gentle-natured hero raised in Kyaro who cares deeply for his friends.
- Jowy (Shimba Tsuchiya): Riliu’s intelligent longtime friend who hides a fierce resolve beneath his noble upbringing.
- Nanami (Ayumi Hinohara): Riliu’s energetic stepsister who keeps the home fires burning while the boys are at war.
- Viktor (Katsuyuki Konishi): The daring “Vagabond Viktor,” a mercenary known for his giant sword and friendly nature.
- Flik (Yuichi Nakamura): The logical “Flik of the Blue Lightning,” a swordsman defined by his blue cloak and sense of responsibility.
- Luca Blight (Taku Yashiro): The “Mad Prince” of Highland who rules through fear and leaves a trail of blood in his wake.
- Jillia Blight (Chika Anzai): Luca’s sister, a reserved princess with a strong backbone who opposes her brother’s cruelty.
The supporting cast includes fan favorites like the strategist Shu (Takeo Otsuka), the sharp-tongued Luc (Ayumu Murase), and even Riliu’s flying squirrel companion, Mukumuku (Masato Niwa).

Editor’s Take
Having finally sat down and played through the remasters of Suikoden I+II last year, I’m beyond excited to see this vision for the Suikoden II anime adaptation come to life. The art style has a distinct early 2000s vibe that perfectly channels the spirit of the games and sets it apart from typical modern anime.
Because this is being handled in-house by Konami animation, it feels like we can finally breathe a sigh of relief. We won’t have to worry about the subpar adaptation quality and disrespect that has plagued so many of the recent Netflix projects.
The casting is solid, though I can’t help but feel Yuichi Nakamura would have been a perfect fit for the menace of Luca Blight. If not Luca, seeing Tomokazu Sugita as Viktor would have been a dream to really nail that organic banter with Flik, given their real-life friendship. Still, seeing Fumi Ishikawa’s character designs stay so visually faithful to the 1998 classic is a massive win. October can’t get here fast enough.
