KB5066835 disables keyboard and mouse input in the recovery environment
According to a report from Guru3D, Microsoft’s latest Windows 11 update (version 25H2, KB5066835) has introduced a major issue that disables keyboard and mouse input inside the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE). This means users can’t use essential recovery options like Startup Repair or System Restore if their system fails to boot. Windows Latest provided a temporary fix for now.
Microsoft confirmed the problem, stating that it only affects WinRE, while USB peripherals still work normally in the standard Windows environment. A patch is in development and will be released soon, with updates listed on the Windows 11 25H2 Known Issues page.
This follows a rough month for Windows updates. Earlier, Microsoft broke the Media Creation Tool, preventing some users from creating installation media, and began enforcing online Microsoft account sign-ins for new Windows 11 installs, a decision that drew backlash from experienced users.
Until the fix arrives, users are advised to keep backups current and avoid actions that could lead to boot failures. If recovery is needed, external recovery drives or full reinstallations may be the only options.
