SEGA has released a new trailer to mark the upcoming 35th anniversary of Sonic the Hedgehog, which first launched on the Sega Genesis on June 21, 1991.
The company confirmed that 2026 will serve as a year long celebration of the franchise, positioning the milestone as a reflection on Sonic’s history while also looking ahead at how the character continues to evolve. Rather than focusing on a single event, SEGA plans to roll out a range of anniversary initiatives designed to highlight Sonic’s cultural impact across games, music, and fan communities.
Planned celebrations span digital projects revisiting Sonic’s legacy, in person fan gatherings, collaborative retail initiatives, exhibition focused events, live music experiences tied to the series’ history, and a new narrative driven podcast set within the Sonic universe.
SEGA described the anniversary as a way to recognize the long standing support of its fanbase while continuing to expand Sonic’s presence as both a gaming icon and a broader entertainment property.
Additional anniversary themed projects, collaborations, and fan focused experiences are expected to be revealed over the course of 2026.
