Metaphor: ReFantazio offers a rich world filled with intricate mechanics and engaging storytelling. This guide offers helpful tips to improve your gameplay and help you navigate the game’s challenges effectively.
Positioned For Success

In Metaphor: ReFantazio, battles utilize a row system similar to classic titles like Shin Megami Tensei and Wizardry. Here’s how it works:
- Row Changes:
- Rows can be changed during and outside of battle without using a turn.
- Front Row:
- Increases melee attack damage.
- Decreases defense.
- Back Row:
- Decreases melee damage.
- Increases defense.
- Skill Use:
- Some skills depend on character positioning.
- For example, against tougher enemies, position characters in the back row and have them guard to minimize damage.
- Archetypes:
- As you progress, unlock Archetypes that allow shifting character positions mid-battle and provide buffs.
Fight The Dragon in the Nord Mines!

Key Tips for the Dragon Fight:
- Save your game: This area cannot be revisited later.
- Fight the dragon:
- Defeating it rewards you with a sword for the Warrior Archetype.
- Once purified at the church, the sword will deal fire damage with each attack and help you progress to level 20.
- Bring a mage: The dragon is weak to ice.
- Your first ice skill, Blizz, is learned at level 2.
Budget Your Reeves

Have you ever purchased equipment in an RPG, only to find a better or equivalent item later in a dungeon? Metaphor: ReFantazio does the same. To avoid wasting your resources, save your reeves before buying gear. If you need to make a purchase, wait until Idlesday, when stores offer discounts.
Gotta Go Fast!

The world of Metaphor: ReFantazio is expansive, so why not navigate it efficiently? After receiving the Prince’s Sword early in the game, you can ride it, significantly increasing your speed compared to running. While you can’t use it in dungeons, riding the sword reduces the time spent backtracking, giving you greater control over your gameplay experience.
Additionally, you can fast travel in town by pulling up the map, so make sure to utilize this feature to easily find and complete quests.

Strategic Synthesis

Synthesis is a new form of attack you use in Metaphor that can turn the tide of battle. These range from support, to damage and there are defensive ones as well. Using two healers for example will unlock the Mahama synthesis, which will help in the first real dungeon against the Spektos.
Archetypes, Archetypes, Archetypes

The Archetype system in Metaphor draws clear inspiration from Final Fantasy V‘s job system, encouraging players to experiment and adapt. Just like in FFV, frequently switching archetypes is essential for unlocking new skills and abilities. By mastering each one and mixing skills, players can form powerful combinations. The game rewards those who explore different archetypes, embracing the flexibility it offers.
For instance, you can inherit Knight’s Proclamation from the Knight archetype to draw aggro onto a party member resistant to enemy attacks. This strategy reduces incoming damage and prevents the enemy from exploiting a weakness in another party member.
When In Doubt, Reset

The reset function lets you restart a fight from the beginning, offering a useful option if you’re struggling. There are several strategic ways to use this feature, such as:
- Discovering an enemy’s weakness and then resetting.
- Attempting to roll for an enemy to miss their turn if ambushed.
- Testing different tactics to find the most effective approach.
A Good Friend Is Its Own Reward

As you level up your followers, they’ll bring various rewards in the form of passive bonuses, such as:
- Discounts on learning an archetype.
- Increased effectiveness with specific weapon types.
- Additional benefits as they continue to level up.
Running The Gauntlet

Once you unlock the gauntlet runner, make it a routine to:
- Check the pantry room inside it daily for free ingredients.
- Visit the deck’s campfire every night for a free food item.
Being Passive

Note the Hero passive traits on archetypes, which can only be used by the protagonist and can significantly ease dungeon exploration. For example:
- The Mage’s passive allows MP regeneration based on defeating enemies in the overworld.
- To maximize this effect, do not destroy the Magla Crystal; instead, keep it active. The Magala Crystals, found in dungeons, continuously spawn enemies in their vicinity until destroyed, providing an excellent opportunity to farm enemies for MP regeneration.
- Combining the Mage’s passive with an active Magla Crystal creates an infinite source of MP, allowing you to sustain your party through extended dungeon runs and day-0 dungeon clears.
This strategy becomes particularly useful starting in the Cathedral dungeon.
Limit Breaking

You can continue earning experience beyond the Master level, and each time you level up past Master, you’ll receive a Hero’s Leaf of Light. This item grants 1,000 Archetype XP instantly to any character and archetype of your choice.
Hope these strategies help you on your journey through Metaphor: ReFantazio! If you’ve got more tips to share or any thoughts, drop them in the comments below—I’d love to hear from you!
