Steam rules now block new adult content post-launch.

Crimson Delight Games, the developer of Tales of Legendary Lust: Aphrodisia, says it had to abandon plans for extra NSFW updates due to Steam’s new restrictions. While the rules prevent adding new adult content to the base game after release, the studio stresses that Valve itself isn’t to blame.

Aphrodisia launched as an Adults Only RPG on September 15, complete with mature content warnings. The team initially planned to roll out more NSFW scenes via updates before releasing a larger expansion in 2026. But in a Steam announcement, the devs explained that because the game already cleared Valve’s review process, new adult content cannot be patched in. Instead, it must be published as DLC, which undergoes its own review.

On Reddit, a Crimson Delight Games rep pointed out that these stricter rules only appeared after last year’s Collective Shout campaign and the added pressure from payment processors. They also highlighted that Valve’s team was helpful throughout:

“We didn’t feel threatened or bullied in any way, and we got the feeling they were trying to do their best to help devs navigate the process.”

That said, regular bug fixes and adjustments to existing content are still allowed. The restriction applies specifically to new NSFW material being added post-launch.

Editor’s Take

It’s telling that Valve is caught in the middle here. Payment processors have long dictated what kind of adult content platforms can host, and this seems like another case of that influence. What’s notable is that the devs themselves emphasize Valve wasn’t hostile, which differs from the usual “big bad storefront” narrative.

Still, the rule creates extra hurdles for smaller adult game studios already operating under tight budgets.
