New anime continues the GATE saga with a naval twist and global fan engagement via Oshi

Anime platform Oshi has officially announced GATE 2: Tides of Conflict, a sequel to GATE: Jieitai Kanochi nite, Kaku Tatakaeri, based on the “Season 2” novels by Takumi Yanai.

This next chapter follows the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) as they take command of operations in the Special Region—introducing diplomatic missions, rescue efforts, and large-scale naval conflict to the familiar isekai battleground.

The sequel is being animated by Studio M2 with T?ru Takahashi (Monster, Lupin III: The Woman Called Fujiko Mine) directing and Tatsuhiko Urahata (Monster, Hi Score Girl) returning as series writer. Character designs are by Shigeru Fujita (Monster, Ghost In The Shell 2: Innocence).

Official Key Visual

Oshi has released a vivid key visual for GATE 2: Tides of Conflict, showcasing both returning and new characters across a vast maritime backdrop.

With fleets, cities, and sea creatures in full view, the art highlights the shifting balance of power and exploration themes that define the sequel’s broader scope.

Season 2 Plot Overview

“Following the reopening of the mysterious ‘GATE,’ the Japanese Self-Defense Forces continue diplomatic and exploratory missions in the Special Region, a realm parallel to our world.

When an American journalist is kidnapped in this region’s troubled seas, an elite Japanese Maritime unit embarks on a high-stakes rescue mission.

This new chapter of the acclaimed fantasy saga explores fresh adventures, diplomatic tensions, and thrilling action in a world beyond imagination.”

Editor’s Take

This is a massive announcement. GATE ended on a cliffhanger nearly a decade ago, and fans have been waiting ever since. It’s a personal favorite of mine—easily one of the most fun isekai anime I’ve watched. The military angle, political intrigue, and sheer absurdity of its premise just worked.

With a surprise return like this, here’s hoping Mieruko-chan gets a Season 2, and maybe even a miracle return for Death Parade. What about you? What long-dormant anime do you want to see make a comeback? Drop it in the comments.
