Nintendo revealed fresh info on Donkey Kong Bananza, their upcoming 3D platformer, during today’s Direct. The game offers new mechanics, a captivating story, local and online co-op, and amiibo support.
Story: Racing to the Planet Core
The adventure starts on Ingot Isle, where golden bananas have been discovered underground. Donkey Kong is ready to claim the prize, but a sudden storm sends him deep into the planet. There, he meets Pauline, transformed into Odd Rock. Together, they race the villainous Void Company to reach the Planet Core, said to grant any wish. Pauline hopes it will return her to the surface; DK just wants more bananas.
Gameplay & Abilities
Donkey Kong wields powerful moves like Dive Punch to drill through earth, rolling to clear obstacles, and Hand Slap to find hidden items. He can also rip up chunks of ground to throw at enemies or ride them by Turf Surfing. These moves combine for dynamic, creative gameplay.
Transformations Powered by Pauline’s Singing
Collect golden bananas to build “Bananergy,” which Pauline’s singing uses to trigger DK’s transformations. Kong Bananza boosts strength, Zebra Bananza increases speed and dashing, and Ostrich Bananza grants flight and Egg Bomb attacks.
Cooperative Play
The game supports local co-op with two players sharing one Joy-Con 2 or via GameShare for players without the game. GameChat enables online voice and video communication for remote co-op sessions.
Collectibles & Progression
Find Banandium Gems, Chips, Gold, and Fossils underground. Gems earn Skill Points to upgrade DK’s abilities. Chips and Gold can be exchanged for items, and Fossils unlock new costumes and fur colors for customization.
Extras: Getaways, Eelevators, and Creative Modes
Take breaks at Getaways to rest and choose background music. Eelevators—subterranean eels—provide fast travel between layers. Photo Mode and DK Artist use Joy-Con 2 controls to capture snapshots and carve stone designs.
amiibo Support
Launching July 17, Donkey Kong and Pauline amiibo unlock Pauline’s Diva Dress and powerful KONG tiles. Scanning other DK amiibo grants gold KONG tiles, while any amiibo gives a terrain boost.
